About the Currie Tartan
The Currie name is the anglicised form of the Gaelic MacMhuirich, pronounced "MacVurich" — one of the most remarkable families in Scottish history. Known as the Learned Kindred of Currie, the MacMhuirichs were hereditary bards, poets, lawyers and historians to the Lords of the Isles and later to the MacDonalds of Clanranald. Closely bound to Clan Donald, the Curries wear the Currie tartan, a variant of the old Lord of the Isles sett.

Currie Family Heritage
The kindred traces its descent from Muireadhach Albanach Ó Dálaigh, an Irish bard of the great Ó Dálaigh poetic dynasty, who came to Scotland around 1213 — tradition says after splitting a steward's head with an axe over a demand for rent. Settling in the west, his descendants became the hereditary bards first to the Earls of Lennox and then to the mighty Lords of the Isles, holding an honoured seat at their court on Finlaggan in Islay.
With the fall of the Lordship of the Isles in 1493, the MacMhuirichs served the MacDonalds of Clanranald in South Uist, where they composed the famous Red Book of Clanranald, a treasure of Gaelic history. They remained working bards for some five centuries — among the longest such traditions in Europe. Niall MacMhuirich, who died around 1726, was the last fully trained practitioner. The motto of the kindred is Inspire to Victory.
