About the Carnegie Tartan
Clan Carnegie is a Lowland Scottish clan of Angus, taking its name from the lands of Carnegie near Carmyllie, which the family — earlier known as Balinhard — acquired in 1358. From these roots rose the great Houses of Southesk and Northesk. A clan with its own chief, today His Grace the Duke of Fife, and its great seat at Kinnaird Castle near Brechin, the Carnegies have their own distinctive tartan.

Carnegie Clan Heritage
Walter de Maule granted the lands of Carnegie to John de Balinhard in 1358, founding the line of Carnegie of that Ilk. Duthac de Carnegie acquired Kinnaird in Angus around 1409 and was killed at the Battle of Harlaw in 1411; his descendants fought for their kings at Brechin, Flodden and Pinkie. Sir Robert Carnegie of Kinnaird was a judge and ambassador to France, and the first to claim the family had been hereditary cup-bearers to the kings of Scots — recalled by the covered cup of the clan arms.
David Carnegie was made Earl of Southesk in 1633, and the family were staunch Jacobites in 1715. The 7th Earl of Northesk was third-in-command under Nelson at Trafalgar in 1805. The name's most famous son, Andrew Carnegie (1835–1918), was born in a Dunfermline weaver's cottage, emigrated to America, built a steel empire, and gave away over 350 million dollars to good causes. The crest is a winged thunderbolt, and the motto Dred God means "fear God."
