Belshes (Belsches) Family Heritage
Tracing to a Norman knight of Bellasis — near Coulommiers in France — the family took its surname from the barony of Belshes in Roxburghshire. From the Border line sprang the Belsches of Tofts, of whom Sir Alexander Belsches was knighted by Charles I in the mid-17th century and raised to the bench as Lord Tofts. The name spread north into Fife and the Lothians, where the Belsches appear among the landed gentry from the 15th century onward.
The most successful branch, the Belsches of Invermay in Perthshire, left their house and a family mausoleum in the old chapel of Muckersie. Though the direct male line died out in the 18th century — the last Belsches of Invermay passing in 1777 — the name endures in Scottish history, not least through Williamina Belsches, remembered as the early love of the young Sir Walter Scott.
