About the Baxter Tartan
The name Baxter is the Scots form of "baker," from the Old English baecestre, and in Gaelic Mac a' Bhacstair, "son of the baker." In the Highlands the Baxters are recognised as a sept of Clan MacMillan: tradition tells of a son of the MacMillan chief who, after a killing, hid disguised as a baker in the kitchens of Inveraray and took the name MacBhaxter. His descendants settled in Cowal, in Argyll. As a MacMillan sept, Baxters traditionally wear the MacMillan tartan.

Baxter & MacMillan Heritage
As kinsfolk of the MacMillans, the Baxters shared the clan's fortunes and its losses — MacBhaxters fell beside their chief at the bloody Battle of Harlaw in 1411. A record of 1377 suggests the Baxters were already reckoned a branch of the MacMillans by then. In the Lowlands the name spread through Angus and Fife, where Baxters served as bakers in the royal burgh of Forfar, and Geoffrey le Baxter of Forfar swore fealty in 1290.
In later centuries the Baxters of Dundee grew famous as merchants and manufacturers: the Baxters of Kincaldrum introduced power-weaving to the city and gave it Baxter Park, while in Moray the Baxters of Fochabers built a celebrated business in fine Scottish foods. The MacMillan crest, a hand brandishing a sword, and the motto Miseris Succurrere Disco — "I learn to succour the distressed" — crown the clan to which the Baxters belong.
