About the MacKendrick Family Tartan

The MacKendrick name comes from the Gaelic Mac Eanruig, meaning "son of Henry." It is in fact the older Gaelic form of the name Henderson, and those of the MacKendrick name are reckoned kin to Clan Henderson, as well as a sept of Clan MacNaughton. As a sept name rather than a clan with its own chief, MacKendrick is most fittingly worn with the Henderson tartan.

The Henderson clan, of which MacKendrick is the old Gaelic form, carries the motto Sola Virtus Nobilitat, "virtue alone ennobles." This collection brings the Henderson tartan into wearable apparel, everyday accessories, home decor and meaningful heritage gifts for the MacKendrick family.

MacKendrick Tartan Pattern and Colours

Worn with the Henderson tartan, this collection draws on a handsome ground of green and blue crossed with black and lifted by fine lines — cool, dignified colours shared with Clan Henderson, fitting for the old kindred of the sons of Henry.

MacKendrick Heritage

The name MacEanruig — MacKendrick — arose in more than one part of the Highlands. One line sprang from the old Glencoe stock, claiming descent from Henry, a son of the Pictish King Nechtan; these MacKendricks became the Hendersons of Glencoe, the hereditary bards and bodyguards of the MacIain chiefs of that glen.

In Argyll, the MacKendricks were a sept of Clan MacNaughton, about Loch Awe and Loch Fyne. Whether of Glencoe or Argyll, the MacKendricks share in the wider story of the Hendersons, one of whose branches rose to hold Fordell in Fife, the seat of the Henderson chiefs. The name is found across Scotland and, through the Ulster plantations, in Ireland and America.
