In 1291 the marriage of the Mackintosh chief to Eva, heiress of Clan Chattan, brought the leadership of that great confederation to the Mackintoshes, who held it, though often challenged by the Macphersons, for centuries. Their seat has been Moy Hall since the 14th century.
The Mackintoshes fought at Bannockburn for Bruce, feuded with the Comyns and the Camerons, and followed Montrose and the Jacobite cause. In the '45, while the chief served with the government, his wife, the celebrated "Colonel Anne" Farquharson-Mackintosh, raised the clan for Prince Charles, and the Rout of Moy became a famous exploit. The crest is a wildcat, the motto Touch Not the Cat Bot a Glove.
