About the MacIan Tartan
The MacIan name comes from the Gaelic Mac Iain, meaning "son of John," and belongs to two proud branches of the great Clan Donald: the MacIans of Glencoe, sprung from Iain Fraoch, a son of Angus Og of Islay, and the MacIans of Ardnamurchan, sprung from Iain Sprangach, a son of Angus Mor. The MacIans of Ardnamurchan held that wild western peninsula and its stronghold of Mingary Castle, and were long a power on the seaboard. The MacIans of Glencoe held their famous glen under their chief, styled MacIain, and it is with Glencoe that the name is most poignantly linked, for the MacIans were the victims of the notorious Massacre of Glencoe in 1692.
Both branches shared in the wider story of Clan Donald, following the Lords of the Isles and, later, the Jacobite cause. The name MacIan is also found in Ulster, in County Antrim, carried there with the MacDonnells. Wherever they are found, the MacIans keep their proud descent from the royal line of Somerled and Clan Donald.
