About the MacFie Clan Tartan
The Scottish Register of Tartans records MacFie — also MacPhie and MacDuffie — as a Clan/Family tartan. The MacFie sett is a handsome green and blue Highland design lifted by fine lines, worn in both ancient and modern shades, fitting for one of the old clans of the Hebrides.
Clan MacFie, from the Gaelic Mac Dhuibhshith, was long seated on the islands of Colonsay and Oronsay, and is reckoned one of the seven clans of Siol Alpin, tracing descent from the ancient Scottish kings. MacFie Heritage
The MacFies were the ancient people of Colonsay, and served the Lords of the Isles as hereditary Keepers of the Records — MacDuffie of Colonsay kept the records of the Isles, and sat on the Council of the Isles. Their chiefs lie buried at Oronsay Priory, where a great tombstone marks Malcolm MacDuffie of Colonsay beneath a carved galley and claymore.
In 1623 the last chief, Malcolm MacFie, was killed on Colonsay, and the clan, dispossessed, became a "broken clan;" a branch found refuge with the Camerons of Lochaber, and MacFies fought at Culloden in 1746. The clan was revived in modern times and, since 1981, is registered with the Court of the Lord Lyon. An armigerous clan today, its motto is Pro Rege, its crest a lion rampant.
