Clan Lyle is an old Scottish clan of Renfrewshire, of Norman origin. The name comes from the Latin de Insula, "of the isle" — in French de l'Isle, whence Lyle — and the family were barons of Duchal in Renfrewshire as early as the 1200s. Lyle Clan Heritage
Ralph de Insula was the first of the name in Scotland, a follower of Walter Fitz-Alan, the High Steward, and around 1170 he witnessed grants to the monks of Paisley. The family held the barony of Duchal in Renfrewshire from early times, and in 1296 John del Ille and Richard del Isle set their names to the Ragman Roll. Sir Robert Lyle was raised by James II to a lordship of parliament, becoming Lord Lyle.
The Lords Lyle were prominent in the affairs of the realm through the 15th and 16th centuries, holding Duchal Castle and lands across the west. Though the lordship in time fell dormant, the name endured in Renfrewshire and spread across Scotland and the world. The crest is a gold cock, crested and barbed, a symbol of watchfulness and courage, and the motto is An I May.
