Clan Lumsden is an old Scottish clan, taking its name from the manor of Lumsden near Coldingham in Berwickshire, first recorded in the 11th century. From their Border home the Lumsdens spread to Fife and Aberdeenshire, holding Blanerne Castle in the Merse and Cushnie, Pitcaple and Tillycairn in the north-east. Lumsden Clan Heritage
The Lumsdens held their Berwickshire lands from early times, and around 1328 Gilbert de Lumsden married the heiress of Blanerne, taking her crest of a white-tailed eagle, or erne, preying on a salmon. From Blanerne the family spread to Fife and to Aberdeenshire, where the Lumsdens of Cushnie, Pitcaple and Tillycairn became notable lairds of the north-east.
The Lumsdens were famous soldiers. In the Thirty Years' War, "Lumsden's Musketeers" fought for Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden; Sir James Lumsden returned to lead the Covenanters at Marston Moor in 1644 under the Earl of Leven, and his brother Robert died defending Dundee. Two centuries later Sir Harry Lumsden founded the famous Lumsden's Guides in India, and was the first to clothe his men in khaki. The crest is an eagle and salmon, the motto Amor Patitur Moras.
