About the Lennox Tartan
Clan Lennox is an old Lowland clan whose chiefs were the ancient Earls of Lennox, a great earldom that once covered the whole of Dunbartonshire and reached into Stirlingshire, Renfrewshire and Perthshire. The name comes from the Gaelic Leamhnach, "smooth stream," for the Vale of Leven that runs from Loch Lomond to the Clyde. A clan with its own chief, the Lennox of that Ilk, and its own tartan, sprung from the old Celtic Mormaers of Levenax.
Whether you bear the Lennox name, descend from Dunbartonshire, or simply admire a great earldom of the west, this collection brings the Lennox tartan into wearable apparel, everyday accessories, home decor and meaningful heritage gifts.
Lennox Tartan Pattern & Colours
The Lennox tartan is a handsome sett of green and blue crossed with black and lifted by fine lines of red — the green and blue of the Vale of Leven and Loch Lomond, and the red recalling the roses of the Lennox arms, cool and dignified colours for a great old earldom of the west.

Lennox Clan Heritage
The Earls of Lennox sprang from the ancient Celtic Mormaers of Levenax, and by the end of the 13th century were among the most powerful nobles in Scotland. Malcolm, the 5th Earl, was a staunch supporter of Robert the Bruce, and stood by him throughout the Wars of Independence. When the direct line failed, the earldom passed through an heiress, and in time to the Stewarts of Darnley, created Earls of Lennox in 1473; Earl Matthew fell at Flodden in 1513.
The most famous of the Stewart Earls was Henry, Lord Darnley, second husband of Mary, Queen of Scots and father of James VI; through him the Lennox blood came to the throne itself. The title later passed to Esmé Stuart, Duke of Lennox, and afterwards to the Dukes of Richmond and Lennox. The chiefship of the clan came at last to the Lennox of Woodhead branch, who hold it today. The crest is a swan's head between two swords, the motto I'll Defend.
