About the Houston Tartan

Clan Houston is an old Scottish clan of Renfrewshire, its name territorial in origin, from the lands once called Kilpeter that became known as Houston — "Hugh's town" — after Hugh de Padinan, who held them in the 12th century. An old armigerous family of that Ilk, with their own tartan, the Houstons bear a winged hourglass in their arms and the fitting motto In Time.

Whether you bear the Houston or Houstoun name, descend from Renfrewshire, or simply admire an old clan of the Clyde, this collection brings the Houston tartan into wearable apparel, everyday accessories, home decor and meaningful heritage gifts.

Houston Tartan Pattern & Colours

The collection draws on warm, handsome colours of gold and green crossed with black and lifted by fine lines — rich, dignified tones fitting for an old family of the fertile country of Renfrewshire, lairds of Houston by the waters of the Clyde.

Houston Clan Heritage

Hugh de Padinan was granted the lands of Kilpeter in Renfrewshire in the 12th century, and in time these came to be called Houston, "Hugh's town." Sir Finlay de Hustone set his name to the Ragman Roll in 1296, swearing fealty to Edward I of England. The family built their castle on the site of an ancient Cistercian foundation, and held their lands of that Ilk for many centuries.

The Houstons acquired a further barony near Whitburn in West Lothian, where Houston House still stands. Sir Patrick Houston of that Ilk married Agnes Campbell of Ardkinglas, and Sir Peter Houston fell fighting on the right wing with the Earl of Lennox at the disaster of Flodden in 1513. The name travelled far: the Texan hero Sam Houston sprang from a family of the Scottish name. The crest is a winged hourglass, the motto In Time.
