About the Graham Tartan
Clan Graham is one of the most distinguished of Scottish clans, of ancient and possibly Norman origin, whose ancestor William de Graeme witnessed the founding charter of Holyrood Abbey in 1128. Twice the Grahams of Montrose married into the royal house, and the clan rose to be Dukes of Montrose. With two great branches, Montrose and Menteith, the Grahams have their own distinctive tartans.

Graham Clan Heritage
Sir John Graham, the loyal right hand of William Wallace, fell at the Battle of Falkirk in 1298 in the cause of Scottish freedom. Sir William Graham married Princess Mary Stewart, daughter of Robert III, and in 1451 their grandson Patrick was created Lord Graham; his descendant was made Earl of Montrose, only to fall at Flodden in 1513. The Grahams acquired the lands of Mugdock near Glasgow and rose steadily among the great families of Scotland.
The most famous of the clan was James Graham, 1st Marquis of Montrose, the "Great Montrose," a brilliant general and poet who fought for Charles I and was executed in Edinburgh in 1650, later honoured with a state funeral. John Graham of Claverhouse, "Bonnie Dundee," led the Highlanders to victory at Killiecrankie in 1689. In 1782 James Graham, 3rd Duke of Montrose, secured the repeal of the ban on Highland dress. The crest is a falcon, the motto Ne Oublie.
