Gartshore Family Heritage
The family of Gartshore of that Ilk was of great antiquity, holding charters of their lands of Gartshore as far back as the reign of Alexander II. Through the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries they held their place as minor landed gentry of Dunbartonshire, appearing in charters and legal records and serving in local administration and, at times, in royal service.
In 1745 the laird of Gartshore was imprisoned by Prince Charles Edward Stuart as his army marched through Kirkintilloch, in reprisal for a suspected plot against the prince. In time the estate passed through an heiress to the Murrays of Ochtertyre, one of whom, John Murray, took the additional name of Gartshore. Among the most noted of the name was Dr Maxwell Gartshore, an 18th-century physician whose writings helped lay the foundations of modern obstetrics.
