About the Elliot Tartan
Clan Elliot is one of the great riding clans of the Scottish Borders — the reivers who rode the frontier between Scotland and England — settled in Upper Liddesdale, where they often held the grim stronghold of Hermitage Castle. The principal early family were the Elliots of Redheugh, from whom the clan chiefs descend. A clan with its own chief, the Elliot of Redheugh, the Elliots have their own distinctive tartan.

Elliot Tartan Pattern & Colours
The Elliot tartan is a distinctive sett of deep blue crossed with dark red and lined with fine threads — one of the few truly blue tartans, worn by the Earl and Countess of Minto and adopted as the clan's own. Elliot Clan Heritage
The Elliots of Redheugh led the clan in the reiving centuries, riding with their neighbours and sometime allies the Armstrongs and holding the captaincy of Hermitage Castle on the moors south of Hawick. Robert Elliot of Redheugh fell at Flodden in 1513. From the late 16th century the Stobs branch, descended from Gawain Elliot of Stobs, became the principal house, and to it the ancient Redheugh lands descended.
From the Stobs line came Gilbert Elliot, "Gibbie wi' the Gowden Garters," whose descendants rose to be the Earls of Minto, governors-general of India and Canada. Jane Elliot of Minto wrote the best-loved version of The Flowers of the Forest, the great lament for Flodden, and General George Eliott heroically defended Gibraltar in its long siege. The chiefship rests today with the Eliott of Redheugh. The badge is a fist holding a sword, the motto Fortiter et Recte.
