About the Drummond Tartan
Clan Drummond takes its name from the lands of Drymen, west of Stirling, from the Gaelic dromainn, "a ridge." By tradition the family descended from a Hungarian nobleman who came to Scotland with the Saxon royal exiles in 1067. A clan with its own chief, the Earl of Perth, and a proud place at the heart of Scottish history, the Drummonds have their own distinctive tartan.

Drummond Clan Heritage
At Bannockburn in 1314, Sir Malcolm Drummond is credited with strewing the field with caltrops — vicious four-pointed iron spikes that crippled the English cavalry — a deed that won him lands in Perthshire and set the caltrops in the chief's arms, with the motto Gang Warily. The clan rose swiftly: Margaret Drummond married King David II, and her niece Annabella Drummond married Robert III and became the mother of King James I.
John Drummond married the heiress of Stobhall in 1345, and in 1487 the chief was made Lord Drummond, with the Earldom of Perth following in 1605. The Drummonds were staunch Jacobites, forfeiting their titles for the Stewart cause in 1715 and 1745, when the Duchess of Perth sheltered Prince Charles Edward Stuart at Drummond Castle. The titles were restored in 1853. The crest is a goshawk, and the motto Gang Warily, "go carefully."
