The Dennistoun name — also Denniston and Danielston — is a territorial one, taken from the old barony of Danzielstoun in the parish of Kilmalcolm in Renfrewshire, "Daniel's settlement," held by the family from the reign of Malcolm IV. An old armigerous family bound by marriage to the Cunninghams of Glencairn, the Dennistouns are most fittingly worn with the Cunningham tartan, which came to that house through a Dennistoun heiress.

Dennistoun Family Heritage
Sir Hugh de Danielestoun set his name to the Ragman Roll in 1296, and the family ever after bore a crowned heart in their arms. By the 14th century the Dennistouns held the greater part of the barony of Glencairn in Dumfriesshire. Robert de Danielstoun served as a hostage for King David II in 1357 and rose to be Sheriff of Lennox and Keeper of the royal castle of Dumbarton — one of the great strongholds of the west.
On Robert's death the family's great estates passed through his daughters: one heiress, Margaret, married Sir William Cunningham around 1399, carrying the lands of Finlaystone and Glencairn into the Cunningham family, who later took the title Earl of Glencairn. The senior line continued as the Dennistouns of Colgrain in Dunbartonshire; John Dennistoun of Colgrain died for the royalist cause in the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. The family arms still bear the crowned heart.
