Clan Dalzell — spelled also Dalziel and Dalyell, and pronounced "Dee-ell" — is a Lowland clan whose name comes from the barony of Dalzell near Motherwell in Lanarkshire, from the Gaelic dail-gheal, "the white meadow." The old spelling carried the letter yogh, which gave rise to more than two hundred recorded forms of the name. A clan with its own chief and the title of Earl of Carnwath, the Dalzells have their own distinctive tartan.

Dalzell Clan Heritage
By legend the name and motto were won in the reign of King Kenneth, when a kinsman of the king hung dead on an enemy gibbet, and a bold gentleman stepped forward to recover the body, crying "Dal Zell" — "I dare" — in the old Scots tongue. From this deed come both the motto and the striking arms of a hanged man. Thomas de Dalzell fought for Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn, and Sir William de Dalzell lost an eye at the Battle of Otterburn in 1388.
Sir Robert Dalzell was created Earl of Carnwath in 1639. The most famous of the name was General Thomas Dalyell of the Binns, "Bluidy Tam," who served the Tsar of Russia, raised the regiment of the Scots Greys in 1681, and led the king's forces against the Covenanters. The 5th Earl forfeited his lands for the Jacobite cause in 1715. The family seat, the House of the Binns in West Lothian, is now cared for by the National Trust for Scotland. The motto is I Dare.
