Dalmahoy Family Heritage
Sir Alexander de Dalmahoy granted the monks of Newbattle free passage through his lands around 1295, and both he and Henry de Dalmahoy set their names to the Ragman Roll in 1296. Roger Dalmahoy served in the garrison of Edinburgh Castle in 1339, and under Robert II, Richard de Dalmahoy was recognised as a Free Baron of Lothian — a family long settled and respected in the country west of Edinburgh.
The Dalmahoys rose to court office: in 1614 Sir John Dalmahoy was knighted by James VI and made Hereditary Under Master of the Royal Household, an honour that brought an augmentation to the family arms of a red baton set with golden thistles beneath an imperial crown. Sir John Dalmahoy of that Ilk was created a baronet in 1679. The crest is a hand brandishing a sword, and the motto Absque Metu means "without fear."
