About the Cumming Tartan

Clan Cumming — historically Clan Comyn — was once the most powerful family in 13th-century Scotland. Of Norman or Flemish origin, taking its name from Comines near Lille, the clan rose through royal blood and shrewd marriage to hold three earldoms and the great Lordship of Badenoch. A clan with its own chief, the Gordon-Cumming of Altyre in Moray, the Cummings have their own distinctive tartan.

Whether you bear the Cumming or Comyn name, descend from Badenoch or Moray, or simply admire a clan that once reached for the crown of Scotland, this collection brings the Cumming tartan into wearable apparel, everyday accessories, home decor and meaningful heritage gifts.

Cumming Tartan Pattern & Colours

The Cumming tartan is a handsome sett of blue and green crossed with black and lifted by bold lines of red and a fine thread of white — deep, noble colours fitting for a clan that once stood at the very summit of Scottish power, Lords of Badenoch from their island fortress of Lochindorb.

Cumming Clan Heritage

Richard Comyn, whose marriage to Hextilda of Tynedale brought the blood of King Donald III into the line, established the family in Scotland in the 12th century. His descendants rose to hold the earldoms of Buchan, Menteith and Angus and the Lordship of Badenoch, ruling from the island castle of Lochindorb. On the death of the Maid of Norway, John "the Black" Comyn was among the chief competitors for the empty throne, and his son John "the Red" Comyn led Scotland's defence alongside, and against, Robert the Bruce.

The clan's fortunes turned in 1306, when Bruce stabbed the Red Comyn before the altar of the Greyfriars Church in Dumfries. In the civil war that followed, Bruce broke the power of the Comyns utterly, and the lands of Badenoch passed to others. The chiefship came to rest with the Cummings of Altyre in Moray, who hold it still as the Gordon-Cummings. The crest is a lion holding a dagger, the badge the cumin plant, and the motto, simply, Courage.
