About the Crosbie Tartan

The Crosbie name — also Crosby and Corsbie — is a territorial one of the Scottish Lowlands and Borders, taken from places called Crosbie or Corsbie in Ayrshire, Dumfriesshire and the south-west, from the Old Norse for "the dwelling by the cross." From their earliest days the Crosbies were followers and vassals of the Bruces in Annandale, and they are recognised as a sept of Clan Bruce, wearing the Bruce tartan.

This collection celebrates the Crosbie and Crosby name and its close bond with the royal House of Bruce, bringing the Bruce tartan into apparel, accessories, home decor and heritage gifts for those who carry the name or trace their line to Annandale and the south-west.

Crosbie & Bruce Tartan Colours

Worn through the Bruce connection, the collection draws on the handsome Bruce tartan — a rich red ground crossed with green and lined with white and black — the colours of the royal house to which the Crosbies were bound, dignified and warm, fitting for the vassals of King Robert's own line in Annandale.

Crosbie Family Heritage

The Crosbies appear in Annandale charters from the 12th century: Iuone de Crosseby witnessed a charter by Robert de Brus to Arbroath Abbey between 1178 and 1180, and the family held lands of the Bruces throughout Annandale and Moffat. Adam Crosbie received a grant of land in Annandale from Robert de Brus, 2nd Lord of Annandale, and the bond between the houses was sealed by marriage — Adam's daughter Euphemia married into the Bruce line.

The Crosbies of Dumfries, styled "of Oulctis" and "of Holm," were among the leading branches, ever loyal followers of the Bruce. Through that loyalty they share in the heritage of King Robert the Bruce, victor of Bannockburn, whose motto Fuimus — "we have been" — speaks of a great and ancient past. The Crosbie family's own motto, Resurgam, means "I shall rise again."
