Craig Clan Heritage
The name appears in Ayrshire and Lanarkshire from the 12th century and on the Ragman Roll of 1296, but the clan's strongest line rose in Aberdeenshire, seated at Craigfintray Castle. John of the Craig led three hundred of his clansmen into the Battle of Culblean on 30 November 1335, fighting for King David II against the forces of Edward Balliol — a decisive victory for the king's cause. By the 15th century there were three families styling themselves Craig of that Ilk.
The Craigs of Riccarton gave Scotland Sir Thomas Craig (1538–1608), the great jurist whose Jus Feudale remains a landmark of Scottish law. James Craig designed the elegant New Town of Edinburgh, his Georgian plan still admired today; and the name reached high office in James Craig, Viscount Craigavon, first Prime Minister of Northern Ireland. The crest is a horseman with a broken lance, and the motto Vive Deo Et Vives, "live for God and you shall live."
