The family may originally have come from Congleton in Cheshire and given the name to their Scottish lands. Congilton Family Heritage
The family of Congalton of Congalton is said to have held their East Lothian barony for twenty generations in the male line. Robert de Congaltoun witnessed a charter of Richard de Moreville around 1182, and Walter de Congilton appears as a witness to a string of abbey charters in the early 13th century. Wautier de Congeltone and Mabille de Cungiltone, both of Edinburghshire, rendered homage in 1296, and members of the family served as jurors on inquests into the lands of their neighbours.
Through the centuries the Congiltons remained a settled family of the Lothians: John Congiltoun was admitted a burgess of Aberdeen in 1548, George Congiltoun held a yard in the Potterraw of Edinburgh in 1610, and in 1673 William Congiltoun of that Ilk was appointed a Justice of the Peace for Haddingtonshire. Their old lands lie near Dirleton Castle, in some of the fairest country of the East Lothian coast.
