Clark Family Heritage
Found in early charters as men of the church and the pen, the Clarks attached themselves to several great clans as men of business to the chiefs. The Clarks of Chlerich traced their descent from Gillemichael vic Chleric, personal servant of Malcolm, 10th Chief of Mackintosh, in the 15th century, and the name took root along the upper Spey, Nairn, Findhorn and Dee. A Johannes Clerk was Prior of Scone in 1524, and in 1623 Richard Clarke of Montrose was made a Vice-Admiral of Sweden.
In the Lowlands, the Clerks of Penicuik in Midlothian rose to prominence, gaining a baronetcy in 1679; from this line came the great physicist James Clerk Maxwell. The name has given Scotland and the world many figures of note, among them Sir James Clark, physician to Queen Victoria, and Jim Clark, the legendary racing driver. The crest is an anchor and the motto Sure and Steadfast — fitting words for a name built on learning and loyalty.
