Name Meaning Of the Chamber / Chamberlain

About the Chalmers Tartan

The Chalmers name — the Scots form of Chambers — comes from the old office of chamberlain, the official in charge of the "chamber" or royal treasury, from the Latin camerarius. By tradition, the Aberdeenshire Chalmers descend from a Cameron who entered the service of the French kings and took the Latin name Camerarius, which became de la Chambre and then Chalmers. Through this link, Chalmers is recognised as a sept of Clan Cameron, and members wear the Cameron tartan.

This collection celebrates the Chalmers and Chambers name and its Cameron kinship, bringing the bold Cameron tartan into apparel, accessories, home decor and heritage gifts for those who carry the name or trace their line to Aberdeenshire and the Highlands.

Chalmers & Cameron Tartan Colours

Worn through the Cameron connection, the collection draws on the striking Cameron of Lochiel tartan — a bold sett of deep red crossed with green and lined with blue and yellow — one of the most vivid of all clan tartans, fitting for a sept of the proud clan of Lochaber.

Chalmers Family Heritage

From their Cameron origins, the Chalmers established themselves in the north-east, where the families of Chalmers of Balnacraig, Cults and Aldbar flourished for centuries, with other prominent branches in Ayrshire. The name was even used as a code-name for Camerons travelling in secret during the Jacobite Rising of 1745, a sign of how closely the two were bound. A grandly named Herbertus served as Great Chamberlain of Scotland under David I, an early echo of the office that gave the name.

The name's most distinguished son was the Reverend Thomas Chalmers (1780–1847), the towering preacher, theologian and social reformer who led the great Disruption of 1843 and founded the Free Church of Scotland. The antiquary George Chalmers wrote the monumental Caledonia, a history of Scotland. From chamberlains to reformers, the Chalmers name has long stood for service, learning and conscience.
