About the Cathcart Tartan
Clan Cathcart is a Lowland Scottish clan whose name comes from the lands of Cathcart on the River Cart, in Renfrewshire, just south of Glasgow. The family appears in record from 1178, when Rainaldus de Kethcart witnessed a charter to Paisley Abbey. A clan with its own chief — the Earl Cathcart — the Cathcarts have no registered tartan of their own, and so are most fittingly worn with the Paisley District tartan of their home country.

Cathcart Clan Heritage
Sir Alan de Cathcart was a loyal companion of Robert the Bruce, fighting beside the king's brother Edward in daring raids against the English in Galloway. His descendant was raised to the peerage as Lord Cathcart in 1447, and the family held Auchencruive in Ayrshire as their principal seat until 1718. The 2nd Lord fell at Flodden in 1513 and the 3rd at Pinkie in 1547 — the family paying again and again in the service of Scotland.
The Cathcarts became great soldiers of the British Empire. The 9th Lord, nicknamed "Patch Cathcart" for the patch that hid a battle scar, fought at Culloden; his son, the 1st Earl Cathcart, captured sixty Danish ships at Copenhagen in the Napoleonic Wars, and the 2nd Earl fought at Waterloo and commanded the army in Scotland. The chief today is the Earl Cathcart. The crest is a hand grasping a crescent, and the motto is I Hope to Speed.
