About the Carruthers Tartan
Clan Carruthers is a Lowland Scottish clan of the Scottish Borders, named from the lands of Carruthers in Annandale, Dumfriesshire — the name from the Brythonic Caer Rydderch, "fort of Rydderch." Long stewards of Annandale under the Bruces, the Carruthers were a riding family of the West March. After their chiefship lay dormant for over two centuries, a chief was confirmed by the Lord Lyon in 2019, and the clan now has its own registered tartan.

Carruthers Clan Heritage
In 1320, Thomas Carruthers received a charter of lands from Robert the Bruce, founding the chiefly House of Mouswald, while his brothers served as Chancellor for Annandale and Chamberlain to the Regent. The Carruthers held the Royal Castle of Lochmaben and the office of Warden of the West March, and were named among the riding clans of the Borders in the "unruly clans" Act of 1587. When the House of Mouswald failed in 1548, the chiefship passed to the House of Holmains.
The Holmains line led the clan until financial disaster overwhelmed the family in 1772, and the chiefship fell dormant after 1809. Then, after more than 210 years and over a decade of research, Dr Simon Peter Carruthers of Holmains was confirmed by the Lord Lyon as 22nd Chief of the Name and Arms of Carruthers in 2019, and inaugurated on the ancestral lands in 2024. The crest is a winged seraphim, and the motto Promptus et Fidelis means "ready and faithful."
