Blair Clan Heritage
The Barony of Blair in Ayrshire was granted in the early 12th century, and Blair Castle near Dalry — raised as a Norman keep with moat and drawbridge by 1201, the stag of the Blair crest carved above its arch — remains one of the oldest continuously inhabited baronial houses in Scotland. In Perthshire, the Blairs of Balthayock descend from Stephen de Blair, who held lands at what is now Blairgowrie in the 12th century. Roger de Blare fought for Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn in 1314.
For generations the two houses contested the chiefship of the whole name, until in 1658 King James VI ruled that the eldest male of either family should take precedence. The name gave Scotland John Blair, the Benedictine monk who served as chaplain and comrade to Sir William Wallace and wrote of his life, and Robert Blair of Irvine, a Covenanting Moderator of the General Assembly. The crest is a stag lodged, and the motto Amo Probos — "I love the virtuous."
