The name appears in record from the 13th century — Richard of Auchinlec was a juror at Lanark in 1263, and several bearers rendered homage in 1296. The Auchinlecks of that Ilk held the Ayrshire barony, while the Afflecks of Angus, first recorded with John of Aghelek in 1306, held the fine tower of Affleck near Monikie and served as hereditary armour-bearers to the powerful Earls of Crawford. By tradition the Laird of Auchinleck rode with William Wallace at Glasgow in 1300.
When the male line of the Ayrshire Auchinlecks ended, the heiress married Thomas Boswell, and the family became the Boswells "of Auchinleck" — the line that produced James Boswell, biographer of Dr Samuel Johnson. In modern times the name was carried to fame by Field Marshal Sir Claude Auchinleck, "The Auk," a leading British commander of the Second World War.
