About the Arnott Tartan
The Arnott family takes its name from the lands of Arnot in the parish of Portmoak, Kinross-shire, near the shores of Loch Leven, where the family was established by the middle of the 12th century. An armigerous Lowland laird family rather than a Highland clan, the Arnotts left their mark in the ruined Arnot Tower. Their distinctive modern Arnott tartan was designed in 2017, drawing on the family colours and the landscape of their home.

Arnott Family Heritage
Records link the Arnots to their Kinross-shire lands as far back as 1105, and by 1284 Michael de Arnoth held the estate. David Arnot of Fife rendered homage in the Ragman Roll of 1296, and in 1429 the lands of Arnot in the sheriffdom of Fife were granted to John de Arnutis. Arnot Tower, the family's L-plan stronghold near Loch Leven, was probably built around 1507 when the lands were erected into a barony for the Arnots of that Ilk.
The crest, a crescent, and the motto Speratum et Completum — "hoped for and fulfilled" — speak of ambition rewarded by endurance. The tower, abandoned around 1700, became a romantic ruin that inspired the young poet Michael Bruce to write of a Romeo-and-Juliet feud between the Arnots and the neighbouring Balfours. Later Arnotts included Dr Neil Arnott, the physician and inventor of the Arnott smokeless stove.
