Fraser Tartan

At Tartan Vibe Clothing, we proudly honor Scotland’s most iconic clans. The Fraser clan is one of the most distinguished Highland families, divided historically into the Lowland Frasers and the Highland Clan Fraser of Lovat. Originating from Norman roots, the Frasers rose to prominence in the 12th century and played key roles in Scottish history, particularly during the Wars of Independence and the Jacobite uprisings. With deep ties to Inverness-shire and the famed Beaufort Castle, Clan Fraser is a symbol of strength, loyalty, and Highland resilience.

How it all started

Territories

The first Fraser recorded in Scotland was Simon Fraser, who arrived in Scotland around 1160 and held lands at Keith in East Lothian. From East Lothian, the Frasers moved into Tweeddale in the 12th and 13th centuries before heading north to Stirling, Angus, Inverness and Aberdeen. Historically, the Frasers of Lovat have been extremely prominent in the local politics and military of Inverness-shire. The name Fraser is still common in the area. Overall, it’s the 23rd most common surname in Scotland, but the 6th most common in the Inverness region.

Clan Chief

The current Fraser Chief is Flora Fraser, 21st Lady Saltoun and for Fraser of Lovat is Simon Fraser, 18th Lord of Lovat.

Castle Fraser - Clan Fraser History

Castle Fraser

Location: Aberdeenshire, Scotland

Castle Fraser, nestled in the scenic landscape of Aberdeenshire, served as the home of the Fraser family for over 400 years. In 1976, the castle was gifted to the National Trust for Scotland and is now open to the public.

The story of Castle Fraser began in 1455, when Thomas Fraser constructed a fortified house known as the Castle of Muchil-in-Mar. Over a century later, in 1575, Michael Fraser of Stoneywood began an ambitious reconstruction of the structure into a grand Z-plan house, a project that wasn't completed until 1636.

In the 19th century, Col. Charles Mackenzie Fraser undertook a major interior remodeling of the tower house complex. However, in the 20th century, efforts were made to restore the castle to its more authentic historical state, undoing many of the Colonel’s changes.

Unlike many castles of its era, Castle Fraser has never been called upon to use its defensive features. Today, it stands as one of the largest tower houses in Scotland, filled with hidden doors, secret staircases, and spy holes—elements that add to its mystique.

Visitors can admire a wide collection of family portraits, ornaments, and heirlooms, each offering a window into the colourful lives and stories of the Fraser lairds. Castle Fraser remains a captivating chapter in the rich history of Clan Fraser.
