About the Cameron Tartan

Clan Cameron is one of the most ancient and fierce of the West Highland clans, its lands lying in Lochaber around Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles. The name comes from the Gaelic cam-shròn, "crooked nose." The chief is known simply as "Lochiel," and the clan's great seat is Achnacarry Castle. With its own chief and several distinctive tartans, Clan Cameron stands among the proudest names of the Highlands.

Whether you bear the Cameron name, descend from Lochaber, or simply admire a clan of legendary courage, this collection brings the Cameron tartan into wearable apparel, everyday accessories, home decor and meaningful heritage gifts.

Cameron Tartan Pattern & Colours

The Cameron of Lochiel tartan is a bold and striking sett built on a deep red ground crossed with green and lined with bands of blue and yellow — one of the most vivid of all clan tartans, inspired by a 1764 portrait of the "Gentle Lochiel." Its fiery red echoes the martial spirit of a clan that fought on the front line at Culloden.

Cameron Clan Heritage

Donald Dubh, the first authentic chief, united the clan in Lochaber early in the 15th century, and the Camerons fought through centuries of Highland conflict — their long feud with the Mackintoshes of Clan Chattan lasting some 328 years. Sir Ewen Cameron of Lochiel, the 17th chief, was a legend in his own time, resisting Cromwell and fighting his last battle barefoot at Killiecrankie in 1689.

The clan's defining hour came in 1745, when Donald Cameron of Lochiel, the "Gentle Lochiel," pledged his clan to Prince Charles Edward Stuart — a decision said to have made the whole rising possible. The Camerons fought at Prestonpans, Falkirk and on the front line at Culloden, and paid dearly in the aftermath. In 1793 Alan Cameron of Erracht raised the famous 79th Cameron Highlanders. The crest is a sheaf of five arrows, the motto Aonaibh Ri Chéile.
