Abernethy Family Heritage
First recorded in the 12th century, the Abernethys served as hereditary lay abbots of Abernethy, a position of real influence in medieval Scotland. Orm de Abernethy witnessed charters of William the Lion, and Alexander de Abernethy played a notable part in the Wars of Independence. In 1445 the family was raised to Lords Saltoun, a title that later passed by marriage to the Frasers.
