About the MacGregor Clan Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records MacGregor as a Clan/Family tartan. The MacGregor sett is one of the most striking of all tartans — bold red crossed with green and black — and is worn in several forms, including the famous red-and-green clan tartan and the red-and-black Rob Roy MacGregor.

Clan MacGregor, or Clan Gregor, is one of Scotland's oldest and proudest Highland clans, the senior clan of Siol Alpin. Its motto 'S Rioghal Mo Dhream means "Royal is my race," a claim of descent from the ancient kings of Scotland, making MacGregor tartan especially meaningful for family pride and Scottish ancestry gifts.

MacGregor Tartan Pattern and Colours

MacGregor tartan is widely recognised for its bold red and green character crossed with black, one of the most vivid of all setts. Ancient shades appear softer, while modern shades are deeper; the red-and-black Rob Roy tartan offers a striking alternative worn the world over.

MacGregor Heritage

The MacGregors claim descent from Griogar, said to be of the royal line of Kenneth MacAlpin, and once held the lands of Glen Orchy, Glenlochy and Glenstrae. When these passed to the rising Campbells, the clan was dispossessed and driven into a landless life as cattle-raiders, becoming known as the "Children of the Mist."

After the Battle of Glen Fruin against the Colquhouns in 1603, King James VI proscribed the very name MacGregor, and for nearly two centuries it was a crime to bear it; many took other names to survive. Through it all the clan endured, its most famous son the outlaw hero Rob Roy MacGregor. The name was restored in 1774, and today Clan Gregor has a living chief, the MacGregor of MacGregor. The crest is a crowned lion's head, the war cry Ard-Choille.
