About the MacDuff Clan Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records MacDuff as a Clan/Family tartan. The most familiar MacDuff sett is a bold red design, close to the royal Stewart but without its yellow and white over-checks, recorded by the celebrated weavers William Wilson & Son of Bannockburn around 1800. A further, quite different MacDuff tartan appeared in the Vestiarium Scoticum of 1842, and dress and hunting variations are also worn.

Clan MacDuff, or Clan Duff, is one of the most ancient of the Lowland clans, its early chiefs the Earls of Fife. The clan motto Deus Juvat means God Assists, making MacDuff tartan especially meaningful for family pride, Scottish ancestry gifts and heritage clothing.

MacDuff Tartan Pattern and Colours

MacDuff tartan is widely recognised for its rich red ground crossed with blue and green and lined with black, a warm and striking pattern related to the royal Stewart tradition. Ancient shades appear softer and lighter, while modern shades are deeper and more formal, and dress and hunting variations are also available.

MacDuff Heritage

The MacDuffs claim descent from the ancient royal Scoto-Pictish line, of which Queen Gruoch — wife of Macbeth — was the senior representative. As Earls of Fife, the MacDuff chiefs held the realm's highest privileges: the right to crown the King of Scots, to lead the vanguard of the royal army, and the sanctuary of MacDuff's Cross. Their ruined stronghold, Macduff's Castle, still stands at East Wemyss in Fife.

The old earldom passed to the Stewarts of Albany in the late 14th century, but the title returned to the family when William Duff was made Earl Fife in 1759, and his descendant Alexander Duff became Duke of Fife in 1889. Though Clan MacDuff has no chief today and is an armigerous clan registered with the Lyon Court, its royal heritage gives this tartan a powerful family identity.
