Learmonth Family Heritage
Thomas Learmonth of Ercildoune — now Earlston in Berwickshire — lived in the 13th century, and won undying fame as Thomas the Rhymer, who by legend was carried off to Elfland by its queen and returned with the gift of prophecy and a tongue that could not lie. His verses foretelling great events, above all the death of King Alexander III, were remembered for centuries. By marriage into the Dairsies, the family established its principal line in Fife.
Sir James Learmonth of Dairsie was Master of the Household to James V and provost of St Andrews, and the family held Dairsie and Balcomie for generations. In the early 17th century George Learmonth, a soldier, was taken by the Russians and settled in Russia, where his descendants became the noble Lermontov family — among them Mikhail Lermontov, the great Romantic poet reckoned second only to Pushkin, whose monument now stands at Earlston. The motto is Spero.
