About the Innes Tartan
Clan Innes is an old Scottish clan of Moray, taking its name from the lands of Innes near Elgin — innis being the Gaelic word for an island, here an island formed by two branches of a stream. The clan descends from Berowald, a Flemish knight granted the lands of Innes by Malcolm IV in 1160, whose grandson Walter took the surname. The clan's chief today is reckoned to be the Duke of Roxburghe, and the Inneses have their own distinctive tartans.

Innes Clan Heritage
The lands of Innes were granted to the Flemish knight Berowald in 1160, and his grandson Walter de Inneys received a charter of confirmation from Alexander II in 1226. The family prospered in Moray, and John Innes rose to be Bishop of Moray, responsible for restoring the great Elgin Cathedral after it was burned by Alexander Stewart, the "Wolf of Badenoch."
Robert Innes, the eleventh laird, fought under the Earl of Huntly at the Battle of Brechin in 1452. Sir Robert Innes, the twentieth chief, was made a baronet of Nova Scotia in 1625, and through the marriage of a later baronet to Lady Margaret Ker, the chiefship in time passed to the Dukes of Roxburghe. The historic seat was Innes House near Elgin. The crest is a boar's head, and the motto Be Traist.
