Horsburgh Family Heritage
The earliest of the name on record is Symon de Horsbroc, who witnessed a charter to the monks of Melrose in the reign of Alexander II, in the first half of the 13th century. William de Horsburgh was a notary public in the diocese of Glasgow in the 1280s, and in 1297 Simon de Horsbrok had his lands restored. The family held their lands of Horsburgh, on the north bank of the Tweed, from these early times.
Alexander Horsburgh of that Ilk is recorded in 1479, and the lands passed down through the family for generations, with the two towers of Nether and Over Horsburgh guarding their ground by the Tweed. The last Horsburgh of Horsburgh to hold the old barony was a lady, on whose marriage the estate passed from the direct line. The name remains not uncommon around Edinburgh and the Borders to this day.
