Clan Garden, more often spelled Gardyne, is an old Lowland family of Angus, taking its name from the barony of Gardyne in the parish of Kirkden. The Gardynes built a strong tower, Gardyne Castle, which still stands, and held lands across Angus, Aberdeenshire, Banff and Perth for centuries. An old armigerous family, the Gardynes have a distinctive tartan of their own.

Garden Family Heritage
Gardyn of Edinburghshire set his name to the Ragman Roll in 1296, and the family of Gardyne of that Ilk held their Angus lands from early times. In the 16th century the Gardynes were locked in a long and bloody feud with their powerful neighbours, the Guthries: in 1578 Patrick Gardyne of that Ilk was slain by William Guthrie, and killings followed on both sides until the Guthries prevailed and the tenth laird, David Gardyne, sold up his ancient lands.
A vigorous branch, the Gardynes of Troup, rose in the north-east, bearing a black boar's head on silver. The first laird of Troup was sent by King Charles I to serve the great Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden in the Thirty Years' War, winning distinction abroad before returning home in 1654. The Gardynes came to hold Banchory, Troup and the fine Delgatie Castle in Aberdeenshire, and the family is represented today by the Bruce-Gardynes of Middleton.
