Fotheringham Family Heritage
Robert de Ffodryngay witnessed a Maule charter in 1261, and Huwe de Fotheringeye set his name to the Ragman Roll in 1296. Around 1399, John Fotheringhame acquired the lands of West Powrie near Dundee, said to be through his marriage to a daughter of the Ogilvies of Auchterhouse, and Powrie became the family's chief seat. Nicholas Fotheringham of Powrie fell with so many of the Scottish nobility at Flodden in 1513.
Sir Alexander Fotheringham of Powrie, a devoted supporter of Charles I, was captured at Alyth in 1645 and died in exile in France in 1652; his grandson David matriculated the family arms at the Lyon Court around 1677. A branch, the Steuart Fotheringhams, sprang from a marriage with the Steuarts of Grandtully and came to hold the fine Perthshire castles of Grandtully and Murthly. The motto of the family is Be It Fast.
