Fitzgerald Family Heritage
The Geraldines descend from Gerald of Windsor, a Cambro-Norman constable of Pembroke Castle in Wales, whose son Maurice FitzGerald came to Ireland in 1169 with the Norman expedition of Strongbow. The family put down deep roots in Leinster and Munster, splitting into two great branches: the Earls of Kildare, who ruled at Maynooth, and the Earls of Desmond, whose lands spread across Kerry, Limerick, Cork and Waterford.
So thoroughly did the Geraldines take to Irish life — through land, language and marriage — that the annals record them as "more Irish than the Irish themselves." Gerald, 3rd Earl of Desmond, wrote poetry in Irish; Thomas, "Silken Thomas," rose in revolt in 1537; and Lord Edward FitzGerald led the rising of 1798. The name reached the White House in the middle name of John Fitzgerald Kennedy. The battle cry of the house was Crom Abú.
