About the Farquharson Tartan
Clan Farquharson is a Highland clan of Royal Deeside in Aberdeenshire, seated at Invercauld and Braemar, and a member of the great Chattan Confederation. The clan takes its name from Farquhar, a son of the house of Shaw of Rothiemurchus, and its true progenitor was Finlay Mor, Royal Standard Bearer of Scotland. A clan with its own chief, Farquharson of Invercauld, the Farquharsons have a rich array of their own tartans.

Farquharson Clan Heritage
The clan sprang from Farquhar, a son of the Shaws of Rothiemurchus, whose son Donald married Isobel Stewart, heiress of Invercauld, bringing the family its lands on Deeside. Donald's son Finlay Mor — a man of gigantic size — was the first Farquharson of Invercauld and Royal Standard Bearer of Scotland, falling at the Battle of Pinkie in 1547; his grave near the field is still called the "Lang Highlandman's Grave." His nine sons founded the great branches of the clan.
In 1595 the Farquharsons joined the Chattan Confederation under the chief of Mackintosh, and won a fierce name as the "fighting Farquharsons." Staunch Jacobites, they followed Montrose and Dundee, and held the centre of the line at Culloden in 1746. John Farquharson of Inverey, the "Black Colonel," burned Braemar Castle, which later passed to the clan. The chiefship rests with Farquharson of Invercauld. The crest is a lion holding a sword, the badge the Scots fir, the motto Fide et Fortitudine.
