About the Fairlie Tartan

The Fairlie name is a territorial one of Ayrshire, taken from the barony of Fairlie in the parish of Largs on the Firth of Clyde. The family, said to descend from Robert de Ross of the Rosses of Tarbert, held their lands as the "Fairlies of that Ilk" from the 14th century. Long associated with Clan Boyd through marriage and kinship, those of the Fairlie name are most fittingly worn with the Boyd tartan.

This collection celebrates the Fairlie name and its long Ayrshire heritage, bringing a fitting tartan into apparel, accessories, home decor and heritage gifts for those who carry one of the old names of the Clyde coast.

Fairlie & Boyd Tartan Colours

Worn through the kinship with Clan Boyd, the collection draws on the handsome Boyd tartan — a dignified sett of blue and green crossed with black and lifted by fine white lines — cool, coastal colours fitting for a family long seated by the shining waters of the Firth of Clyde at Largs.

Fairlie Family Heritage

William de Fairlie was included in a pardon granted by Edward III at Berwick in 1335, and the family bore three water budgets in their arms, a mark of distinction from their Ross ancestors. Sir Robert Fairlie of that Ilk built Fairlie Castle on the Ayrshire coast in 1521, and the family bound itself to the great houses of the west — David Fairlie married Catherine Crawford of Kilbirnie in 1526, and Sir John Fairlie married Marion Crawford of Jordanhill.

Sir John Fairlie's daughter Marion married Thomas Boyd of Linn, and later married into the line of the Marquesses of Bute. A separate branch, the Fairlies of Bruntsfield in Edinburgh, purchased lands in Ayrshire and married the heiress of Rowallan. Alexander Fairlie of Fairlie became a noted improver of agriculture in 18th-century Ayrshire. Through their long kinship and marriage the Fairlies are reckoned a sept of Clan Boyd.
