Clan Crawford is one of the great old families of the Scottish Lowlands, taking its name from the barony of Crawford in Upper Clydesdale, Lanarkshire, where the Clyde winds down through the high moors. Of Anglo-Danish and Anglo-Saxon roots, the Crawfords rose to prominence in the 12th century. An armigerous clan today, the Crawfords have their own distinctive tartan.

Crawford Clan Heritage
By legend, Sir Gregan Crawford saved King David I from a charging stag in the park of Holyrood in 1127 — an act commemorated in the clan crest of a stag's head with a cross between its antlers, and linked to the founding of Holyrood Abbey. In 1196 Sir Reginald Crawford was made hereditary Sheriff of Ayr; his sister married Malcolm Wallace of Elderslie and was the mother of the patriot William Wallace, and the Crawfords rallied to their Wallace cousin in the Wars of Independence.
The chiefly line was that of the Crawfords of Auchinames, who received their Renfrewshire lands from Robert the Bruce in 1320, with great branches at Craufurdland, Kilbirnie and Jordanhill. Sir Thomas Craufurd of Jordanhill stormed Dumbarton Castle in 1570 in one of the boldest feats of his age. The last chief sold the ancient lands and emigrated to Canada in the early 20th century. The motto Tutum Te Robore Reddam means "I will give you safety by strength."
