Cochrane Clan Heritage
Walter de Coueran witnessed a charter in 1262, and William de Coughram rendered homage in 1296. Robert Cochrane, a favourite of James III, met a grim end at Lauder Bridge in 1482, hanged by jealous nobles led by Archibald "Bell-the-Cat," Earl of Angus. When William Cochrane of that Ilk left no male heir in the early 1600s, he secured the succession by requiring that whoever married his daughter Elizabeth take the Cochrane name and arms — and from that union the line of chiefs continued.
Sir William Cochrane acquired Dundonald in Ayrshire and was created 1st Earl of Dundonald in 1669. There followed the "Fighting Cochranes," chiefs who served at sea and on land for generations. The greatest was Thomas Cochrane, 10th Earl (1775–1860), a naval commander of such daring that Napoleon himself called him Le Loup de Mer, "the Sea Wolf"; he later led the navies of Chile, Peru, Brazil and Greece. The crest is a horse passant, and the motto Virtute et Labore.
