Carmichael Clan Heritage
The lands of Carmichael were part of the Douglas territory granted by Robert the Bruce in 1321, and between 1374 and 1384 Sir John de Carmichael received a charter for them from the Earl of Douglas, in reward for his support. The barony, extending to some fourteen thousand acres, was confirmed in 1414. The Carmichaels fought beside the Douglases at Otterburn in 1388, where the Scots defeated Henry "Hotspur" Percy.
The clan's most famous deed came in 1421 at the Battle of Baugé in France, where Sir John de Carmichael of Meadowflat rode against Thomas, Duke of Clarence — brother of Henry V of England — unhorsed him and broke his own spear in the charge, an action commemorated by the broken spear of the clan crest. Later Carmichaels became Lords Carmichael and Earls of Hyndford. The motto Tout Jour Prest means "always ready."
