About the Burns Tartan
The Burns name comes from the old word burn, a stream — a family living "by the burn" — and is found in older forms such as Burn, Burness and Burnes. Burns Family Heritage
The name in its various spellings is found across Scotland from early times, the singular Burn common in Dumfriesshire and the Borders, and Burness in the Mearns, where the poet's great-great-grandfather Walter Burness farmed at Bogjorgan in Glenbervie. The poet's father William Burness left Kincardineshire to seek work, settling at last in Ayrshire, where he built the cottage at Alloway in which his famous son was born in 1759.
Robert Burns (1759–1796) became Scotland's national poet, his songs and verse — "Auld Lang Syne," "Tam o' Shanter," "Scots Wha Hae" and the "Address to a Haggis" — beloved the world over. Each year on the 25th of January, Burns Night suppers celebrate his birth from Scotland to every corner of the globe.
