About the MacIver Clan Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records MacIver as a Clan/Family tartan. The MacIver sett is a handsome green and blue Highland design, close in character to the tartans of the western clans, and is of relatively recent origin; it is worn in both ancient and modern shades.

Clan MacIver, from the Gaelic Mac Ìomhair, "son of Ivar" — a name of Old Norse root — made its home in Argyll, closely bound to the great house of Campbell. The clan motto Nunquam Obliviscar means "I will never forget," an answer to the Campbell motto, making MacIver tartan especially meaningful for family pride and Scottish ancestry gifts.

MacIver Tartan Pattern and Colours

MacIver tartan is recognised for its green and blue ground crossed with black and lifted by fine lines — cool, dignified colours of Argyll, close in character to the other old western tartans. Ancient shades appear softer, while modern shades are deeper.

MacIver Heritage

The MacIvers took their name from an ancestor named Ivar, of Norse root, and held lands in Argyll — at Lergachonzie, Stronshira and Glassary — from early times, with a stronghold at Dun Mor near Lochgilphead. By tradition they descended from the same stock as the Campbells, through Duncan, Lord of Lochow, and were great favourites of the house of Argyll, holding the keeping of Inveraray Castle.

After an agreement with the Earl of Argyll in 1564, many MacIvers took the name Campbell or MacIver-Campbell. Other MacIvers were found in Wester Ross, in Mackenzie country, and in Caithness, and the name, of Norse and Gaelic root, spread widely. An armigerous clan today, the MacIvers keep the motto Nunquam Obliviscar and the crest of a boar's head.
