About the MacFarlane Clan Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records MacFarlane as a Clan/Family tartan. The best-known MacFarlane sett is a bold red, green and blue design, while a distinctive black and white MacFarlane tartan appeared in the Vestiarium Scoticum of 1842 and is still worn as an alternate. The clan sett is worn in both ancient and modern shades.

Clan MacFarlane held the head of Loch Lomond at Arrochar, and its chiefs descended from the ancient Celtic Earls of Lennox. The clan motto This I'll Defend and the war cry Loch Sloy make MacFarlane tartan especially meaningful for family pride, Scottish ancestry gifts and heritage clothing.

MacFarlane Tartan Pattern and Colours

MacFarlane tartan is widely recognised for its bold red, green and blue character crossed with black and white, a striking and confident pattern. Ancient shades appear softer and lighter, while modern shades are deeper; the black and white Vestiarium sett offers a bold monochrome alternative.

MacFarlane Heritage

The MacFarlanes take their name from Parlan, a descendant of the old Celtic Earls of Lennox, and held Arrochar and the western shore of Loch Lomond for centuries, with their war cry Loch Sloy taken from a small loch near Ben Vorlich. Famed as fierce fighters and bold night-raiders, they gave the full moon the by-name "MacFarlane's Lantern," for it lit their way on their forays.

As kin to the Earls of Lennox, the MacFarlanes shared the Lennox motto This I'll Defend, and their chiefs were MacFarlane of that Ilk, of Arrochar. Walter MacFarlane, the 20th chief, was one of the greatest antiquaries of 18th-century Scotland. Though the chiefly line later faded, the clan endures worldwide, proud of its Loch Lomond home. The crest is a demi-savage holding a sheaf of arrows.
