About the Lindsay Tartan

Clan Lindsay is one of the great clans of Scotland, its chiefs the Earls of Crawford — the premier earldom of Scotland. The name is territorial, from Lindsey in Lincolnshire, and the family came north in the 12th century, quickly rising to the highest rank. A clan with its own chief, the Earl of Crawford and Balcarres, and its own tartan, the Lindsays carry the resolute motto Endure Fort.

Whether you bear the Lindsay name, descend from Angus or Lanarkshire, or simply admire a great clan of Scottish history, this collection brings the Lindsay tartan into wearable apparel, everyday accessories, home decor and meaningful heritage gifts.

Lindsay Tartan Pattern & Colours

The Lindsay tartan is a rich and handsome sett of deep red and green crossed with blue and lifted by fine lines of white — warm, dignified colours fitting for a premier clan of the realm, worn with pride from the Angus glens to Upper Clydesdale.

Lindsay Clan Heritage

The Lindsays married into the royal house early: Sir James Lindsay wed Egidia, granddaughter of Robert the Bruce, and the seal of a Lindsay was set to the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320, Scotland's great assertion of independence. Their tower in Upper Clydesdale, Tower Lindsay at Crawford, was stormed from the English by William Wallace himself. In 1398 Sir David Lindsay was created Earl of Crawford, the premier earldom of Scotland.

The Lindsays made Angus their heartland, with their seat at Finavon at the mouth of the glens, and branches spread as Earls of Crawford, Lindsay and Balcarres. Their story had its darker turns, as when the 8th Earl was seized by his own son, the "Wicked Master," in 1541. The earldoms of Crawford and Balcarres were at last united, and are held today by the chief. The crest is a swan rising from a coronet, the badge the lime tree, and the motto Endure Fort.
